My head removed...(March 8 2003)

Dear friends I have removed the head for the first time, not my own ;-) the cylinder head at my Interceptor. Found no conventional copper sealing, just a piston ring look-alike type of seal.

Should this be changed for a new one, to ensure it to be completely sealed between head-cylinder, when re-assembly it? I assume that the rubber seals always should be changed for new ones? Your advice much appreciated.

All the best Anders

I have been using the same pair of seal rings on my Series II since 1969. I have had the heads off many time over the years and I have never had a problem with leakage at the cylinder.

The oil seals for the push rod tunnels are a completely different matter. They seem to leak weather I replace them or not. I wish there were a better way to seal the tunnels.

Did you ever complete all those mods with respect to the oiling problems

Mad Max
Did you ever complete all those mods with respect to the oiling problems on the Series II and if you did, did you post a synopsis of what the end result was? ( if you did I missed it so will you please resend?)
Cheers
Rick Fisher

I have not completed my experiments but they have been on hold while Ole and I have been exploring the possiblility of fitting a better oil pump. My last experiment of installing a pulsation dampener in the timeing cover made a real improvement but not as much as I had hoped.

I have been trying to find a way to increase the relief pressure on the secondary relief valve but have not as yet located the proper spring. I really don't have much hope for this modification because I don't think it will significantly improve the oil pressure over the current 20 psi.

I think the only way to make a real improvement is to fit a bigger pump. Ole and I have been searching for a pump to do just that but we have not made a selection yet. You can be sure that as soon as we have a solution, we will let everyone know. Madmax

The only 1970 Interceptor in Mexico?(March 12 2003)

I have just joined the discussion group, and need some help.

Last week I found what is probably the only 1970 Interceptor in Mexico. The bike has a very sad story: Originally it was delivered in July 1970. At the end of this year the clutch went burst, and the bike was sent to a shop, where it sitted for 6 months waiting for new parts. Somewhere during these 6 months the bike was stolen from the shop, and 3 months afterwards it was recovered. Unfortunatelly when the bike was recovered, some parts were missing (carbs, instruments, headlight, exaust, and other bits and pieces). The owner got so mad and angry that the bike was sent to his farm, and it has been sitting there since then...

Eventually I met the original owner last week, and we share the same love for bikes. He didn´t want to sell the bike, but he needs the money, and I promised to him that I can bring the bike back to its original condition. The history of this bike is pretty sound, since the original owner showed me all the documentation related to the bike (importation invoices, documents reporting the bike stolen, etc).

So it is a 1970 Interceptor, one owner, around 2,000 original miles, and some parts missing. It has been sitting for more than 30 years now.

I know almost nothing about this bike (appart from what I found on the web), and need to know:

1. Where to find parts? (prefererably in the USA)
2. Where to find maitenance manuals?
3. How difficult it can be to put this bike together again?
4. Where shall I start?

My intention is to rebuild the bike, and ride it as much as I can!

By tomorrow I will have some pictures which I will be posting in this discussion group.

As of now I would appreciate very much any help, or even just a word of motivation...

Thanks

Paulo

Paulo,

Great story. The parts you say are missing are not hard to find. Your best source is to order these from Alan Hitchcock in England.

http://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/ If you insist on a source in the USA, start with Sam Avellino (sp). He is in Mass. and he can get most of what you need. The shipping cost may be lower from Sam, but it is difficult to find prices better than Hitchcock's.

I don't have Sam's contact info (I am not sure of the spelling either). You should be able to get manuals form these same sources. As for the difficulty and where to start, that depends on you. If the motor is free it probably just needs a quick flush and tune up and it will run.

My 1967 Interceptor was in a chicken coop for years and it only needed a carb clean and 4 or 5 oil changes. Mexico is a big country, where are you located?

Series II Article - Classic Bike(March 14 2003)

Hello all,

I just picked up the February issue of Classic Bike magazine. (Being in Canada, we're a little behind on delivery out of England) There is a good article by Ray Knight telling about when he was asked by Reg Thomas (RE's chief of design and development) to race test the newly redesigned SII in 1969.

I found the the article quite iteresting and just wanted to make everyone aware of it.

On the RE front, I now have the Interceptor home, safe and sound, in the workshop. I am just doing a quick refurbish on an old Honda CB750 for something to put put around on while I'm rebuilding the Enfield. If all goes according to plan, I'll start Enfield this summer and hopefully have it ready for the road in Spring 2004. (Time and money permitting of course!!)

Cheers
Gary

I just bought an Interceptor (March 14 - 27 , 2003)

Hi, I just bought an Interceptor quite a ways away from my hime and won't take delivery for probably a month from now. It has a black gas tank, similar to the picture of the Webber-carb one on this site. Would this have been original?

I'd also like to know if you can give me info on the bike if I send you the serial numbers.

Thanks.
Don U

Hi Don
Thanks for your feedback. Re, that Royal you mention Join up the discussion group (if you haven't already) and post the question there).
It would be good if I could also help many who need help to research origin
of their bike. I already spend many hours each week keeping the web site up to date, as you might appreciate.
But the guys in the discussion group are sure to help. It would be a quick reply for someone who know the actual model.
Mines are 69 and 70 models. The one you refer to was once owned by gREgg in the discussion group, so pose the question to him.
Regarding serial numbers, post them in you question too. Then you have the Royal Enfield owners group, link on our site, they have also been able to assist based on serial numbers. If you want to research the site, under feedback from members during past months, I know there are question and answers on serial numbers
Good luck and do send a photo when you've got it in hand.

Hi Royal,
Thanks for your reply. I can't seem to get onto the discussion page on your site because I don't have a yahoo ID. I'm connected to digital (cable TV based) computer hook-up. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Don U

Hi Don

Click for larger Congratulations on your bike. I picked up the picture as hinted by you.
You'll just have to persevere with Yahoo discussion group I'm afraid. It's worth it, cause it'a a good discussion group
Meanwhile, on the lightening fast ozemate sit, your Bike is in the photogalery,
just go to e-mails this month off the PITbutton or press the ART button.

Royal

Hi Don Well yes, the discussion page has been set up on Yahoo and you need
to follow their instructions for joining. The procedure is rather complicated. I have covered it somewhat in the knowledgebase on my web site, which might be worth you checking out
Good luck
Royal

Hi Royal, Thanks for getting back to me. Yahoo won't let me in no matter what I try. It doesn't recognize or acknowlege my ID or Password in the first steps; guess I'll have to read the postings on your site "from afar". The Interceptor I bought can still be seen on e-bay if you search for item #2405967843. The Weber carb set-up is different from the one shown on your site. I've been in touch with Carlo (Carl Best) on the Brit-Bike site and will prob have to source info there.

Thanks for your help; you have created a great site.

Don U

Hi Royal, I'd like to thank you for including my correspondence and pix of my recently purchsed RE on your terrific Interceptor web site. What a neat surprise!

HELP I need of the timing plate cover

Finally! A site that is for 750 interceptors. I have a 1969 that i Obtained from the original owner in 1973.i am in need of the timing plate cover which has the red re stamped into the metal.any help with this would be a blessing.this is all i need to put it back on the road, and start turning heads again.
Jack

Still no luck. Anybody that has this item is not willing to part with it! Hell i,d be happy with a wax or sand casting at this point. Hitchcocks Wants the part number which i don't have so , i'm open to sugestions, Help!! I refuse to give up!

Jack Spivey

The part number for the Contact Breaker Cover is 49632. Best US
source is Sam Aveleno but he doesn't advertise or take credit cards.

MadMax

Jack,
My suggestion is to contact Mick Page at Burton Bike Bitz in England, he had a bunch of "Indian" (brand name not manufacture) points covers for the SII. They
were for the Tartarini Interceptors. Perhaps he still has them?

A harley triple tree on a royal enfield frame?

Hi all I was wondering on the steering head. Can you put a harley triple tree on a royal enfield frame? And will the bearings fit in the frame because the bearings that where in it are shot?

Thanks for thge help,

Harleyrider30

I am told that a Suzuki front end will bolt on. There is a guy in Illinois who has a front end from a Kawasaki twin disc on his Interceptor.

Rick

Yes indeed, it is easy, Rick.

A twin disk front end from a mid-70's Suz GT750 will bolt on to an Inter with very minor mods:

1. Use teh Suz triple clamps and bearing cups
2. Bore the bearing cups from teh Enfield frame to pass the Suz steering stem.
3. Assemble using new 1/4" balls and grease.

I've done a couple of conversions and it works surprisingly well. The spoke wheel even looks the part, and the stanchions are about the correct length. You can even use the big Suz speedo, which runs off a front wheel drive.

It may be wise to shed one disk and a caliper to save some weight. You may need to dismantle and thoroughly clean all the hydraulics and seals:
remember they are over 25 years old.

If one is really stuck on using the HD Sporty forks and wheel, they may slot right into the 35mm Suz triple clamps.

Single Carb Interceptors

ADE !? from Worcestershire has an Mk 1 and he writes

Does any one know how many single carb interceptors were made- mine is an ex-police bike from california i believe

Hi ade:
I own a 1965 Interceptor with a single carb and live in California. it would be great to know how many were produced in that configuration. Also does yours have an air filter? Could you post some detail photos on the www.ozemate.com/interceptor site? or send to me directly as an attachment. Will take some photos of mine if you are interested.
Orlan

Hi Orlan
have just finished restoring my interceptor, started it for the first time today - what a buzz! had my friend round, grahem, to help me with my final touches, everyone needs a mate like grahem, he knows more about interceptors than anyone else i know!
i have no air filter on mine as on s/carb model there isnt enough room to fit one
i live in redditch worctershire, less than a mile away from where my interceptor was first built and now its been rebuilt in redditch! after travelling to california and back!
got to take some photos will forward some to you as soon as possible !
ade

Hi Adrian
Great story about the interceptor returning to its home grounds in Redditch.
If you have any photos you can e-mail, that shows the signle carburettor set
up, I'll put it up on the interceptor web site
www.ozemate.com/interceptor
Best is to have a low (yellowish) sun in your back and a simple uncluttered
background for your photo.
If you have any details about your bike as well would be great.

Royal

Hi Adrian
What a great feeling to fire up this great bike, (or any other) for the first time.
I have up some pictures to the photo section of this group.
They are of the air filter on my bike. I have looked for another like it
without success. If anyone can identify it please contact me. It works very well as I have a mile of dirt road to get to my house my bikes all must have a filter.
Much Joy
O.Riggs

Hi Adrian

What tyres is recommended by you

I am going to change the tyres at my Ser.II -70. What tyres is recommended by you guys? The original - Dunlop K70, are they still good enough to recommend?
Any problem to get the correct dimensions? Another alternative should be Avon Speedmaster. I would prefer a British tyre - I assume that Avon and Dunlop still is manufactured in the UK?

Best regards
Anders
