Below you see
Grċa (grey) Amazonen (1964 B18), Alfred (1965 B20, performance modified(155Hp)
2 doors) and Palle (1965 B18 4 doors).
Alfred Palle
"Grċa Amazonen"
The pictures above were taken early 1997, just after we bought "Palle"
(right) and had Gråa Amazonen for sale. Grċa Amazonen was our
first Classic Volvo experience. Although dad grew up with them in Sweden.
Grċa Amazonen was bought between 1993-94 and was a very reliable car.
Unfortunately just after we had purchased it the previous owner crashed
it on his way to deliver it and required the whole front end to be fixed
up, so it took two weeks before we got it home. After a couple of wonderful
years with Gråa Amazonen we purchased "Alfred" in '96,
who was just called "vita (white) Amazonen" then.
"Alfred" (a.k.a. "Freddo" & "Vita Amazonen")
Alfred was imported from Malaysia by an Airforce officer in the mid
80's. In Malaysia it had served as an unmarked car for a police defective.
It was in very good condition (in appearance at least) with air-conditioning,
darkest legal tinting, very good condition red vinyl upholstery and
two pack paint work. It is also two door, slightly rare in Australia.
You could almost say it was in showroom condition, especially after
we took all the better parts from Gråa Amazonen and put on as
well. It really does look quit sporty with two doors though unfortunately
the engine was very much on the tired and worn side of things (at least
compared to Gråa Amazonen, which had quit a bit of pep). Though
that sure enough got sorted out in late 1998 when a B20 racing engine
was imported from Sweden. It had the works - maximized intake ports
and valves, R camshaft (racing), 3kg off the flywheel, extractors, 2
and a half inch exhaust though most importantly Two Large Weber Carbies
+ we had to get a shortened sports intake manifold from Melbourne for
it all to fit in. It now puts out 155hp, definitely not what people
expect when you pull up beside them at the lights with an OLD Volvo
"Palle"
Now for our beloved
Palle. Palle was bought early 1997 and at the time was the quickest
it is a '65 just like Alfred. Though it started to get crowded with
all these Volvo's (as you can see in the top two pictures), So we decided
that our trusty Gråa Amazon had to go, since it was in the worst
condition, with torn vinyl floors with rust and cracked and faded paint
on the bonnet. The wheels weren't as nice as on the '65's. Though Gråa
Amazonen received a good new owner who was a newly migrated Englishman.
Palle would have to be the most appreciated Amazon over the years, especially
with myself (Curt) and my sister Lisa who have both done our learner
driving and taken our drivers test for our Provisional license in it.
And since I started driving it in July 1998 we haven't had any accidents
or problems, in fact during the entire period we have had these classics
no one has had any car accident or mechanical Dramas (Mechanical Dramas
on Alfreds highly modified engine doesn't count). People often turn
their heads when we come zooming along in these cars and that's what
its all about.
Though it is especially under the year 2000 where Palle's service has
been thoroughly appreciated after dramas with Alfreds engine, the motorbike
and the Jeep all kindoff simultaneously.
