   Mudguard/Seat Carrier

"Royal" 28-May-02
Hi All, trying to establish if the "Interceptor Mudguard/Seat
Carrier" is identical or at least compatible between MkI and II.

----

Yes, the Series II and Series 1A sub frames are essentially interchangeable. The major difference is that one has a single tab at teh rear for the mudguard, while the other has two tabs. There might be minor differences in the seat mounting, but nothing that can;t be easily overcome.

The Series II part may be a bit too long for the short wheel base Series 1.

However, If the bike in question is a Series 1 (rather than a 1A) Interceptor, the correct seat subframe for it does not form a complete loop around the rearof the mudguard, but instead should fasten to the sides of it with short 5/16" dia screws. The mudguard is quire a bit different too, with substantial valences to pick up the subframe.

Of course, the later subframe will fit the frame in place of the earlier
part, though the mudguard will need replacing as well to make it look right.
The seat mountings will need to be adjusted as well, though some of the seat pans had more than one set of threaded inserts to suit different mounting positions.

Series II fork stanchions are AMC G15, NOT Commando.

For anyone's information: Series II fork stanchions are AMC G15, NOT Commando.

Also the top yoke is Dominator, and the bottom yoke Dommie(Domintor) with extended headstock shaft (ie slightly narower than the Commando).

Hi all I was wondering on the steering head. Can you put a harley
triple tree on a royal enfield frame? And will the bearings fit in
the frame because the bearings that where in it are shot?

Thanks for thge help, Harleyrider30

I am told that a Suzuki front end will bolt on. There is a guy in Illinois who has a front end from a Kawasaki twin disc on his Interceptor. Rick

-----

Yes indeed, it is easy, Rick.

A twin disk front end from a mid-70's Suz GT750 will bolt on to an Inter
with very minor mods:

1. Use teh Suz triple clamps and bearing cups
2. Bore the bearing cups from teh Enfield frame to pass the Suz steering
stem.
3. Assemble using new 1/4" balls and grease.

I've done a couple of conversions and it works surprisingly well. The spoke
wheel even looks the part, and the stanchions are about the correct length.
You can even use the big Suz speedo, which runs off a front wheel drive.

It may be wise to shed one disk and a caliper to save some weight. You may
need to dismantle and thoroughly clean all the hydraulics and seals:
remember they are over 25 years old.

If one is really stuck on using the HD Sporty forks and wheel, they may slot
right into the 35mm Suz triple clamps.

Front Fork Replacement options

For a Series II Interceptor I believe they are off an Atlas or early Commando, and that the tube is longer to fit throught the Enfield frame. Is an N15 or G15 lower triple tree is a straight swap?or can one adapt an Atlas or Early Commando lower by lengthening the tube? (Stephen)

I have a 66 Matchless G15 CSR. Books claimed that the fork tubes were the same ones used on the Series II. They are available here in Canada from Walridge motors. (Bobby B)

Seems to me that the manufacturer of these stanchion tubes in the USA is 'Forking by Frank'.
Old Frank is long gone, but the company has been in business for decades.Tubes are available either plain, or hard chromed.
